Anambra State House Of Assembly has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner for health to commence move for the establishment of a general hospital in a land already donated for the purpose in Nnewi North Local Government Area.
Hon. Augustine Ikechukwu who is the member representing Nnewi North Constituency and also the chief sponsor if the motion while making his submissions on Tuesday 15th August at the plenary stated that the right to good health is guaranteed under the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.
According to him, “Section 17(3) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria as amended stated that government shall provide adequate medical and health facilities for all persons.
He said that health remained a vital aspect of human existence and can not be overemphasized, noting that the establishment of the general hospital in Nnewi North will further bring healthcare closer to the people.
“Nnewi is one of the densely populated town and Nnewi North LGA can only boast of a Federal Teaching Hospital without a general hospital to reduce the work load of the Teaching Hospital resulting to most death in the council area due to poor drug administration due to poor access to healthcare, he said”
He went further to affirm that Ndi Nnewi are ready to support the Governor in providing some of the necessary infrastructure in the establishment of the hospital to create easier access for their average constituents to good and standard medical care and health attention.
In their various submission, the Majority Leader, Hon. Ikenna Ofoedeme, Deputy Majority Leader and member representing Njikoka One, Hon. Jude Akpua, Deputy Minority Whip and member representing Anaocha One, Hon. Nkechi Ogbuefi, member representing Nnewi South, Hon. John Bosco Akaegbobi, member representing Ihiala Two, Hon
Golden Iloh, member representing Ogbaru, Hon. Noble Igwe, member representing Idemili North, Hon. Azubike Udemezue, member representing Aguata one, Hon. Tony Muobike and member representing Awka South One constituency, Hon. Henry Mbachu amongst others all the supported the motion and called for the quick establishment of the General Hospital In Nnewi North.

They said that the large population of Nnewi requires another standard hospital to attend to virtually the daily healthcare needs of her teaming population and noted that more pressure has been more on the present teaching hospital with limited facilities to attend to the healthcare needs of the people.
The Lawmakers went further to affirm that Health is wealth and also noted that the establishment of the Nnewi North General Hospital will create room for more employment of medical personnels thereby reducing the rate of our medical practitioners traveling abroad for work and practice.
