Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah Transitions from YPP to APC for a New Progressive Agenda

Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, representing Anambra South Senatorial District, has officially announced his decision to join Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). This significant political move was made public during a brief plenary session at the Senate, presided over by Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio.

Senator Ubah’s move to the APC is driven by a commitment to unite with other Igbo Progressives and stakeholders in reshaping the political landscape for Ndi Igbo, addressing their current underrepresented status in national politics.

In his announcement, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah said, “Today, I have transitioned from the Young Progressives Party, YPP, to the All Progressives Congress, aligning with my progressive agenda to empower an Igbo nation that can reclaim its rightful place on the national stage.”

Senator Ubah, a pioneer of the idea, seeks to lead a reconnection to the national center in the post-Buhari era. This is to facilitate better negotiations on behalf of the Southeast region, focusing on security, infrastructure development, and the restoration of the Igbo community’s equitable share of national resources.

Addressing the media after the plenary session, Senator Ubah highlighted the anomaly that has arisen, where political parties from other regions can win presidential elections without securing votes from the five southeastern states. He views this as a critical factor motivating his efforts to reintegrate his people into national politics.

Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, a record-breaking figure in Nigerian politics, had adopted the YPP in 2017. Under this political platform, he secured victory in the Senatorial elections of 2019 and 2023. He also successfully facilitated the election of a YPP Federal House of Representatives seat and three state Houses of Assembly seats. Two additional Federal House of Representatives seats won by the party are currently under dispute at the tribunal.

Senator Ubah’s decision to join the APC aims to provide greater opportunities for the people of his region, leading to more robust democratic dividends and interventions aimed at resolving security challenges in the Southeast.

This transition reflects Senator Ubah’s commitment to driving Igbo progress and contributing to a more equitable and prosperous Nigeria. His entrance into the APC is seen as a positive step toward national reckoning for the Igbo community.
