Temporary Suspension Aims to Ensure a Smooth Transition to Electricity

Lagos State Government has announced a temporary suspension of the Blue Line operation of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) on the upcoming Saturday and Sunday. This decision is part of an effort to ensure a seamless transition to electric rail operations.

The announcement came from the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during a recent update on the metro line. Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that temporarily stopping passenger services is a common practice worldwide when implementing significant changes. Transitioning to electric rail is expected to enable the government to increase the number of trips and provide a safer and more efficient passenger service to a larger population.

Starting on Monday, the number of train trips on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line is set to increase significantly, with the aim of moving from 12 to 54 trips. By the end of November, the government plans to have a total of 74 trips, offering commuters an enhanced experience.

Governor Sanwo-Olu remarked, “I’m pleased to provide this important update on our metro line. Commencing Monday, October 16, 2023, we will increase the number of train trips on the LRMT Blue Line from 12 to 54, with the goal of reaching 74 trips by the end of November.”

“To facilitate this transition, we will need to suspend train services on Saturday, October 14, following the morning peak service, and for the entire day on Sunday, October 15, as we switch to electricity. This temporary pause is essential to prioritize your safety. Suspending passenger operations during critical transitions is a globally accepted practice to effect significant changes. Transitioning to electricity will allow us to introduce more trips and safely serve more passengers.”

The governor further emphasized the achievements of the LRMT Blue Line, which launched on September 4, 2023, and has already transported over 80,000 passengers. The government’s goal is to exceed 150,000 daily passengers between Marina and Mile 2 in the coming months.

Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded by saying, “The future of Lagos trains is bright, and I am committed to enhancing your commuting experience. Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to improve our public transportation system.”

The brief suspension of the Blue Line operation over the weekend is expected to pave the way for a more efficient and passenger-friendly electric rail system.
